Travel toiletries: What I learned after 3 years of traveling carry-on only
All my "wisdom" about travel toiletries summarized in one video. 😂
Ever since I gave up my apartment a few years ago, I've been living out of a carry-on sized backpack and I had the pleasure to test many products.
I've already made several videos about travel sized toiletries, but I wanted to make a video that summed it all up and talk a little more about what toiletries I carry for ultralight or short trips and long term travel.

Thanks for a great video❤ I had the Eagle Creek toiletry bag that was the same size as your one 😅 I loved it - so roomy with lots of compartments, but, so big and heavy!! I gave it away after a couple of years and now use an Osprey hanging bag in rip nylon which I love (and it is much smaller. I love Osprey bags. I am experimenting with using the Osprey Ozone convertible 36 litre wheeled suitcase as my carryon. I use my 9litre Osprey Tempest as my personal item. As you said, with weight restrictions getting worse I may have to review my luggage OR wear more of my clothes getting on the plane!! I remember carrying a big rucksack all round Europe - it was a struggle to even get it on my back and if someone pushed me and I lost my balance I wouldn’t be able to get up - a bit like a tortoise on its back with its legs kicking in the air!!! 😂❤

I wouldn’t travel with the Scrubba, but I’ve used it as my only ‘washing machine’ for three years in France. Easier and cheaper than a ‘real’ washing machine! For travel, I’ll use a plastic bag with a sealer at the top.

    1. Knickers. After doing a long hike there is nothing worse than wet sweaty knickers - but ‘no more’!!! I have started wearing Icebreaker Womens 200 Oasis Boy Shorts - I love them! They are made from a thin wool. Highly recommended. Mine give me an IPL - bonus! 2. Anxiety symptoms: You could try doing some Breathwork (5 mins or less) - check out free audio from James Nestor or Patrick McKeown; Meditation - You could try Mindful Innovations (free) or Breathwork-Mindfulness with Vidyamala Burch (free); Morning Pages style journalling (reference Julia Cameron) - there are a lot of RUclips videos on the benefits (and this is my preferred style of journalling). Happy travels ❤ I love your videos🥰

Really useful content - I know I need to work harder to reduce what I take - I am a ‘wanna be’ carryon traveller. I am away for a month in the UK and have managed to pack everything into a carryon and a personal item (including camera gear, a tablet and laptop). But… it’s hard and a real effort to figure it out for me. I will do as you have suggested with the packing list reviews post travel. You mentioned 333 capsule wardrobe - I love this method and use it at home. For travelling I have just started using the 5-4-3-2-1 method (5 tops; 4 bottoms; 3 shoes; 2 layers (jacket and a zip up fleece); 1 dress). It’s an adaptable system and I am loving it. ❤x

Great video giving a very rounded view on the use (or not) of packing cubes. I currently use packing cubes and generally roll my clothes. I have the Eagle Creek compression ones (with the zip all the way round so the top can be opened up). I like them because they are light weight. However, the ‘compression’ never works for me - maybe I have too many clothes in them. I am looking with envy at your Peak Design cube - maybe I will treat myself to one of these in the future. Thanks for your idea about using a dry stuff sack to compress a puffer jacket - this will come in handy for me on my next big trip to Iceland🥰🤗

I am so confused how is 33 items of clothing for 3 months is minimal? That’s 129 pieces per year, and I checked that underwear is not included. How many clothes do people own that this is considered a challenge? To many it would be a challenge to be able to afford it…

    • @teknosbeka
      @teknosbeka 3 дня назад

Ok I added it up because I was curious. I wear about 55 items of clothing in a year. This includes stuff like 5 summer dresses and 7 bags so I wouldn’t even call it “minimal”. It also includes all my coats (including rain coat), jewellery, shoes and stuff like that. It does not include underwear, wool tights for winter, my corset, and stuff like hair ties.

For sunscreen for the face, try Loreal's revitalift filler spf50 face cream. It's not a sunscreen per se, but it provides great coverage for the face, it's not oily, doesn't leave a residue and it also hydrates your skin. I really like it.

Frame of reference: Woman, not so minimal at home (in transition to that), believe in personal style over fashion, often need a nicer option, usually fly. I vastly prefer personal item only. I can use cabin baggage, but I’d rather not. I have a rule to always have the swim kit, as I’d much rather swim than have gym time in a trip). So, like you, Maggi, I think in terms of packing for X days and washing. The people in the second, third, fourth location have no idea what I wore in the last place. Likely I don’t remember! My swim kit is a pair of shorts meant to be hike and swim, a top with support. Both can be in my wearing cycle if needed. Usually, I let the swim top be a layer, rather than a “tank top” because I’m rather modest. Heaviest clothing and shoes on plane, along with a layer and big scarf. For “pack three days” In a cube, two additional bottoms (skirts and light weight trousers), three additional tops, and a layer. If a dress will fit, it comes along. Extended trips might get one more of each. I don’t bother with PJs or lounge wear (a term that didn’t exist in my childhood). I pack baselayers, and they fill both spots **if needed**, and do for chilly locations. (Winter gets heavier baselayers and an extra set as I believe in wear a day, air a day. Jeans only get to go as travel day wear. They aren’t in the pack. If that pack needs to be moving place to place, the jeans are on. Two bras, three to five undies. One pair of socks unless the destination is snowy. Then, two. A dry bag for laundry collection, then as washing space. Shoes: Usually, travel day plus one other. Climate dependent. I hike in barefoot shoes in most terrain. Xero sandals are my go to. Toiletries: solid shampoo, conditioner, soap. An spf CC cream for my face. SPF Lotion for body. Deodorant. Rollerball of essential oil blends, diluted. Toothbrush, paste dots, mouthwash concentrate. Tinted lip balm (rather than a plain and a lip color). Maybe mascara. I have hand lotion in my pockets at all times by habit. I use a richer one traveling as it will do for feet and body. Everything gets decanted into smaller containers. I carry a phone, an e reader, four way charging cord, battery bank (nite Ize, lightweight and small). Some trips I’ll need to work, so I bring my tablet then. I have a tiny art set with watercolors, pens, paper. The paints fit a mint tin. I bring three pens, three brushes that hold water, and a notebook or several small sheets of watercolor paper. All in a 28L with extra room. A water bottle, hat, and grocery bag fit in the outer pockets, or clip on. If rain is an issue at the destination, I might buy a cheap umbrella there, or bring a rain jacket. I keep a pack cover in my pack.

73 yo woman solo traveler here. I love your videos and here's something I would add: taking only a backpack takes planning and time. At least a week ahead of time, get out everything you want to take, including underwear, sock, pj's, meds, scarves, and lay it out neatly somewhere where you'll see it every day. Then start to evaluate: Is this too heavy? Does that go with everything? And so on. It's important----I know people who want to bring just a backpack and start the night before. Then they panic and end up paying for checked luggage. It's a puzzle that takes thought and experimentation.

Outstanding helpful real world review. I'm going to try some of your recommended gear, including this 30L backpack. I am also curious about your upcoming review of the Peak Design backpack and if it fits your travel style. It's pretty heavy with an empty weight of 2 kg. I saw a product demo clip and it's overloaded with features. It's probably the zippers alone on that thing, that make it so heavy. Also a hefty price tag. I also have a CabinZero 44L Classic backpack that passes as carry one for some airlines (22 cm. x 35 cm. x 56 cm). It has not many features but it's pretty light for its size (760 g).

Some years back I tried merino wool t-shirts for everyday wear. They were great for comfort and stink resistance, but always fell apart too quickly. Developed holes so holding it up in front of a lamp was like having my own little planetarium. Didn't matter hand wash, machine wash, hang up and don't use at all... Also the brand didn't matter. Holes! My guess is some combination of moths, backpack or seat belt friction, and wet wringing. Whatever the cause, even the cheapest cotton or polyester tees outlasted them many times over. I still have several long sleeve merino shirts from Costco. They developed holes too! Some had never even been worn yet, with no obvious bugs in the closet. But they were about $10 each on sale and still work fine for cool weather hiking in Colorado. So I machine washed them all (in case of invisible moth eggs) and started keeping them rolled up in a sealed dry bag. At some point one brand (I think it was Ibex?) made shirts from threads of merino wrapped in a nylon helix in a 7:1 ratio. Got one on clearance from Sierra Trading Post and then never saw any more. Still not sure how sturdy it was, because I gained weight and lost track of it in my wrong-size clothes. But I like the idea of nylon reinforced wool. Wool socks and pullovers/sweaters seem to last longer than tees. Possibly because the wool is usually blended with materials that are stronger and more forgiving. Definitely a correlation between fabric thickness and longevity though.

I think platypus style water bags are way more practical than bottles. When they are empty they almost literally use 0 space, but you can fill them with 1-2-3 liters of water (depending on the size), and always just take up as much space as their water content.

Hero clip would have also been my number one trip. I bought one as well for my one-month trip to Asia, and never ever used it or even thought about using it.

You are right. I have 2 hero clips, bring them everywhere, never use them. You're right about everything else, too!
